Lesson 12: Meem Sākin Rules (مِيمُ السَّاكِن) Next

The Meem Sākin Rules

Just like Noon Sakin, a Meem with Sukun (مْ) also has special rules depending on the letter that follows it. All three rules are called Shafawi (شَفَوِي) — meaning "of the lips" — because Meem is articulated by pressing the two lips together.

1. What is Meem Sakin?

مْ

Meem Sakin

A Meem (م) carrying a Sukun (ْ)

Key Facts
Articulation Point: Lips

Meem is produced by pressing both lips together. This is why all 3 Meem Sakin rules are called "Shafawi" (شفوي = labial).

Where Does It Appear?

At the end of a word followed by the next word in recitation. E.g., عَلَيْهِمْ صِرَاط

Compared to Noon Sakin

Noon Sakin has 4 rules and 28 triggers. Meem Sakin is simpler — only 3 rules.

Ghunna (ناsal hum)

Like Noon Sakin, Ghunna (a 2-count nasal hum from the nose) appears in 2 of the 3 rules.

The Three Shafawi Rules at a Glance:
1
Idgham Shafawi
إدغام شفوي
Lip Merging

مْ merges into the following م — two Meems become one with Ghunna.

Trigger: م only
2
Ikhfa Shafawi
إخفاء شفوي
Lip Concealment

مْ is hidden/concealed before ب — lips barely touch with a Ghunna hum.

Trigger: ب only
3
Idhar Shafawi
إظهار شفوي
Clear Lip Pronunciation

Meem is pronounced clearly before all other 26 letters.

Trigger: All other letters

2. Rule 1 — Idgham Shafawi (إدغام شفوي) · Lip Merge

Trigger: مْ followed by م

When a Meem Sakin is immediately followed by another Meem, the two merge completely into a single, prolonged Meem with Ghunna.

3. Rule 2 — Ikhfa Shafawi (إخفاء شفوي) · Lip Concealment

Trigger: مْ followed by ب

When Meem Sakin meets Baa (ب), the Meem is concealed. The lips prepare to close for ب while a nasal hum (Ghunna) flows through the nose for 2 counts — then ب is released.

Common mistake: Fully pronouncing the Meem before ب, or skipping the Ghunna. The Meem must be hidden — not fully pronounced.

4. Rule 3 — Idhar Shafawi (إظهار شفوي) · Clear Pronunciation

Trigger: Any letter except م and ب

When Meem Sakin is followed by any of the 26 remaining letters, pronounce the Meem clearly and distinctly. No merging, no concealing, no Ghunna.
