Lesson 13: Qalqalah — The Echo (القَلْقَلَة) Next

Qalqalah — The Echo (القَلْقَلَة)

Qalqalah is the distinctive bouncing echo or reverberating vibration that occurs on 5 specific letters when they carry a Sukun. It is what gives Quranic recitation much of its beautiful, rhythmic quality — you have been hearing it your whole life!

القَلْقَلَة الصُّغْرَى Minor Qalqalah القَلْقَلَة الكُبْرَى Major Qalqalah

1. What is Qalqalah?

The Golden Rule

When any of the 5 Qalqalah letters carries a Sukun (ْ) — produce a bouncing echo.

The echo is created by releasing the letter slightly after stopping — a brief, audible vibration that gives the sound its distinctive "bounce."

Percussive Sound

Like a drum-tap — press, hold slightly, then release with a tiny bounce at the end.

5 Letters Only

Qalqalah applies to exactly 5 letters. All other letters with Sukun are pronounced plainly.

Two Strengths

Minor (Sughra) in the middle of words. Major (Kubra) at the end of words when stopping.

The 5 Qalqalah Letters — Hover to feel the echo:
ق
Qaf
Deep throat stop
Back of throat pressed against soft palate
ط
Ta
Emphatic T stop
Tongue tip presses the upper gum firmly
ب
Ba
Lip stop
Both lips pressed together
ج
Jim
Palate stop
Mid tongue presses the hard palate
د
Dal
Dental stop
Tongue tip presses upper teeth
Mnemonic (حروف القلقلة): قُطُبُ جَدٍّ "Axis of an ancestor" — all 5 letters in two words you can memorise!

2. Sughra vs. Kubra — Strength of Echo

Not all Qalqalah is equal. The strength of the echo depends on where in the word the Qalqalah letter sits.

Qalqalah Sughra
القَلْقَلَة الصُّغْرَى

Minor / Small Echo

Occurs when the Qalqalah letter has a Sukun in the middle of a word (not at a stop/waqf). The echo is present but lighter.

يَقْطَعُ
Yaqta'u — He cuts
Both قْ and طَ carry Sukun mid-word → light echo
More Examples:
يَقْتُلُون
Yaqtuloon
اقْتَرَبَ
Iqtaraba
يَبْدَأ
Yabda'
مَجْدُ
Majdu
Qalqalah Kubra
القَلْقَلَة الكُبْرَى

Major / Large Echo

Occurs when the Qalqalah letter is at the end of a word and you stop (waqf) on it. The echo is stronger and more pronounced.

الفَلَقْ ↩
Al-Falaq — stopping = strong echo on قْ
When pausing at end → bold, bouncing echo
More Examples (stopping position):
الحَقْ ↩
Al-Haq
الفَجْر ↩
Al-Fajr
إِيَّاكَ ↩
Iyyak
المَسَدْ ↩
Al-Masad
