Lesson 9: Leen Letters (حروف اللِّيْن) Next

The Leen Letters

After mastering long vowels (Madd), we now meet the Leen letters — the softest, most gentle sounds in Arabic. They glide effortlessly without stretching, creating the beautiful flow you hear in Quranic recitation.

حروف اللِّيْن Huroof al-Leen Tajweed Rule

1. What Are Leen Letters?

The Golden Rule

A Leen letter is:

Waw (و) or Ya (ي) that carries a Sukun (ْ) and is preceded by a letter with Fatha (َ).

وْ
Waw Leen
preceded by فَ
يْ
Ya Leen
preceded by فَ

The word leen (لِيْن) means soft, easy, gentle. These letters produce a light gliding sound — not as long as Madd, but not as short as a consonant.

Letter 1
وْ

Waw with Sukun (وْ)

after a letter with Fatha

خَ
Kha + Fatha
+
وْ
Waw Sukun
=
خَوْف
Khawf (Fear)
Sounds like a soft "OW" glide
Letter 2
يْ

Ya with Sukun (يْ)

after a letter with Fatha

بَ
Ba + Fatha
+
يْ
Ya Sukun
=
بَيْت
Bayt (House)
Sounds like a soft "AY" glide

2. Leen vs. Madd — Don't Confuse Them!

Leen (لِيْن)
Soft, gentle glide
Waw Leen: خَ + وْ = خَوْف Fatha before وْ
Ya Leen: بَ + يْ = بَيْت Fatha before يْ

The preceding letter carries a Fatha (َ) — regardless of the letter type. Duration: 1 count (no stretching).

Madd (مَدّ)
Stretched, long vowel
Waw Madd: نُ + وْ = نُور Damma before وْ
Ya Madd: كِ + يْ = كِيس Kasra before يْ

The preceding letter carries its matching vowel (Damma→Waw, Kasra→Ya). Duration: 2 counts (must stretch).

4. In the Quran

Leen letters appear throughout the Quran. Here are famous examples every Muslim already knows — now you can identify them by name.

Al-Baqarah 2:2
لَا رَيْبَ فِيهِ
"No doubt in it"

Leen present in:
رَيْبَ
Ya Leen (يْ after رَ)
The يْ in رَيْبَ glides softly — do not stretch it like Madd.
Al-Baqarah 2:38
وَلَا خَوْفٌ عَلَيْهِمْ
"And no fear upon them"

Leen present in:
خَوْف / عَلَيْهِمْ
Both Waw Leen + Ya Leen!
خَوْف has Waw Leen; عَلَيْهِمْ has Ya Leen. Two Leen letters in one phrase!
Al-Layl 92:1
وَاللَّيْلِ إِذَا يَغْشَىٰ
"By the night when it covers"

Leen present in:
اللَّيْلِ
Ya Leen (يْ after لَ)
This entire Surah is named after a Leen-bearing word — اللَّيْل (the night).
Al-Fajr 89:1-2
وَالْفَجْرِ وَلَيَالٍ عَشْرٍ
"By the dawn and ten nights"

Leen present in:
لَيَالٍ
Ya Leen (يْ in لَيَالٍ)
Even in the plural form, the Leen character of يْ is preserved.
